For the production of the opera Caligula by Giovanni Maria Pagliardi, first performed in Venice in 1672, Vincent Dumestre came up with something special: For the staging of this baroque opera, which is well worth discovering, he decided not to use human actors, but to collaborate with Mimmo Cutticchio, one of the last representatives of the famous Sicilian puppet theatre tradition. Here the so-called "Pupi" are mainly moved by means of rods and are characterized by elaborate costumes. The DVD thus allows us to participate in one of the most fascinating and traditional theatre forms in Europe, which unfortunately is in danger of disappearing in this form.
