opis
Every time Christophe Rousset digs up another tragédie lyrique by Jean-Baptiste Lully, it is an event. After "Roland," "Persée," "Bellérophon," "Phaéton," "Amadis" and "Armide," all showered with critical praise, Rousset and his Lully-sound specialists from Les Talens Lyriques now offer "Alceste." This is the second collaboration between the successful tragédie-lyrique team of Lully and Quinault, his librettist. Its first performance at the Royal Academy of Music in 1674 was accompanied by much criticism, ostensibly of a substantive nature. However, Lully had just received the opera privilege, which did not make him only friends. In the end, the opponents could not harm the triumph of "Alceste," because at the court of Louis XIV, where Lully's style of entertaining diversion with numerous dances and choruses was appreciated, it celebrated several successful performances.
