At the time of the Spanish War of Succession, it was still the duty of a composer to praise not only the greatness of God in his sacred works, but also the power of the commissioner. Jordi Savall and his outstanding ensembles have excavated two works that represent the multi-choral mastery of the time. The Missa Scala Aretina by Francesc Galls from Barcelona is based on the Hexachord of the medieval music theorist Guido von Arezzo and triggered a music theoretical controversy after its publication. The French composer Henry Desmarest was engaged at the court of the Spanish King Philip V from 1701 to 1707. In addition to the Mass for two choirs and two orchestras, his 18 motets became famous.
