What a sound! Those basses! For his latest recording of works by guitarist Johann Kaspar Mertz, Frank Bungarten has chosen a very special instrument: The contrabass guitar, made according to an exemplary preserved historical model by Johann Gottfried Scherzer, has a row of additional bass strings on a second neck. This means that it is now possible to experience the opulent sound of Mertz's compositions up close - probably for the first time since the death of the "last Viennese virtuoso" in 1856.
