The comic story of the two merchant brothers Olivo and Pasquale, who judge everything in the world strictly by its monetary value, is a masterpiece of opera buffa. One wonders why this cheerful piece, which is not inferior to Donizetti's popular masterpieces such as L'elisir d'amore or Don Pasquale, either musically or in terms of libretto, has not long been better known. Perhaps this is due to the role of Pasquale, which, according to Donizetti's rules, should be sung in Neapolitan dialect? Not everyone can do that! Filippo Morace, who slipped into the role of Pasquale in this performance, can. And so this recording should come as close as possible to the composer's original ideas.
