There are works that are so good that you have to have two of them. The early B major Piano Trio op. 8 by Johannes Brahms is one of them, and it is one of the great fortunes in music history that the piece has been handed down in two versions. The over-critical Brahms had otherwise quite completely destroyed all early versions, sketches and drafts of his works. The Vienna Piano Trio reopens its Brahms edition in MDG's superior super audio sound with the late version of this youth work, which juxtaposes it with the mature op. 87.
