The "Lamentations of Jeremiah" were written on the occasion of the first destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC and are considered one of the most dramatic and moving texts of the Old Testament. The Frenchman Jacques Colebault, called Jachet of Mantua, who spent most of his life in Italy, was an influential member of the generation of composers between Renaissance greats Josquin Desprez (1450 / 55-1521) and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594).
