Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi cited the works of William Shakespeare as inspiration for his operatic genius. Three of Shakespeare’s works went on to be masterfully transformed into operas by Verdi’s pen.Macbeth, the opera that propelled Verdi into stardom, is performed here by The Royal Opera under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano. Phyllida Lloyd directs this production, with Simon Keenlyside and Liudmyla Monastyrska portraying the Thane and his Lady.José Cura as Otello interprets the Moor in an intense, penetrating staging by Willy Decker at Barcelona’s Liceu alongside the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of the Grand Teatre Del Liceu.Christopher Purves shines in the title role of Falstaff under the inspirational baton of conductor Vladamir Jurowski. The production, staged by Richard Jones, radiates humor, streaked with bittersweet wisdom.Extra features on this recording include cast interviews, rehearsing with Sir Antonio Pappano, illustrated synopsis and cast galleries.
