Until I heard one of their pieces on Radio 3, this fine trio were unknown to me. Happily, that is no longer the case now I've had the pleasure of listening to 'Mating Calls' a few times. All the music is by modern composers, and some of it is written especially for this trio, augmented by a guest bass player. The repertoire is fresh, lively; at times lyrical, at times jazzy/spiky, or more demanding. Overall though, is the sheer sense of delight in music-making, and in sustaining performances of a very high standard. There is some wonderfully imaginative interplay between instruments, and some beautifully lyrical passages, including a wonderful cantilena between flute and cello in 'Full Moon Trio', dancing over the piano's backwash of sound. Apparently, every piece here is a 'world premiere recording', and comes with a high standard of musical invention, performance & recording quality. This lovely disc is a rare delight for anyone with an interest in contemporary chamber music.
