Slated to succeed Simon Rattle as principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, Kirill Petrenko, when serving as general music director at the Berlin Comic Opera, conducted symphonic works by the late-Romantic Josef Suk for cpo, now available as a 3CD box. On offer on Discs One and Two are the great Asrael symphony and the symphonic poem A Summer’s Tale, both written during and in the aftermath of grief-stricken times for Suk. The Tale of a Winter’s Evening overture after Shakespeare’s drama A Winter’s Tale and The Ripening, a later tone poem composed 1912-17, encompass the third and final disc.
