Bizet's atmospherically dense music and brightly colored orchestration have made "Carmen" one of the most played operas in the world. The foreplay and the famous arias - the self-confident Habanera, the seductive Seguidilla and the proud Torero song - are familiar to almost everyone. • Franco Zeffirelli uses the dimensions of the Arena of Verona for a production in Cinemascope. For him, the realism of the opera, which irritated the Paris audience at its premiere in 1875, is the order of the day: where other directors have to content themselves with hints, his life in Seville is full to bursting. • Zeffirelli draws from the full and plays the huge stage with a mass spectacle, which he stages down to the smallest detail. Powerful and authentic images take the audience on a journey back in time to the 19th century.
