Pandit Balaram Pathak is acknowledged as one of the very greatest artists in North Indian music. Pathak (1923-1991) was the creator of a unique style of sitar playing - one of particular melodic refinement, sweetness of tone and use of harmonics - and has been cited as an influence by successive generations of sitar players. Not as well known outside India as Ravi Shankar or Vilyat Khan, this is largely due to Pathak having only made two LPs, both long deleted. This 1986 Radio France recording (originally released by Ocora in 1987) thus fills a glaring void in the history of recorded sitar music. The album features three ragas, with tabla and tanpura accompaniment.
